Guys,

I hope you'll find my idea interesting and useful.

There are a lot of smart sockets for sale, but you can do it yourself.

Here is my idea of an inexpensive DIY smart socket.

Step 1: Tools and Materials

For this project I used:

  • KOPPLA 3-way socket with 2 USB ports link
  • SONOFF Basic Wifi switch link
  • Tools: knife, soldering iron, cross and Tri Wing screwdrivers, electrical tape, glue gun, voltmeter (optional), scissors or nippers, drill (optional), a piece of electrical wire (for example from an old iron).

Step 2: Disassembly

Flip and unscrew the four screws on the bottom cover of the Tri-Wing screwdriver. The bottom of the outlet is on the latches, so you need to make an effort to remove it.

My idea is to make controllable sockets. USB charging will always be on.

-> unplug the power supply wires from USB charging.

Step 3: Wiring and Assembly

Two short wires that were previously soldered off from the switch lay to the side where the wifi switch will be located.
Cut off with a margin of wire for laying from charging to the switch, clean the ends.

Take two short wires and solder to the switch along with the long wires from the USB charging.

Take the Sonoff and apply to the outer wall to mark future holes. Drill the holes and push the wires.

Take the lid and apply KOPPLA, if the wires interfere, then try to put it more tightly so that they do not interfere and do not get damaged. Only afterwards try to cut off the extra wires.

Take a voltmeter and check all connections in the dial tone mode. If everything is OK, then fasten the wires in Sonoff, glue it to the wall and twist / snap all covers.

Step 4: Finish

That's all. Connect to the electrical network and check the work of Wifi switch.

Average cost of all materials $24.

Good luck!
