IKEA Tabletop Pipe Riser Multi-Level Glowforge Table
This table is built specifically to host my Glowforge laser cutter, but could be used for an array of other things. The reason for the multiple layers is to be able to store materials underneath the Glowforge, while providing a stable base for the laser cutter. The table is on casters, so it can be moved easily, especially when using the pass though slot. I saw a few similar items on the Glowforge forum that used IKEA parts, but none of them used pipe fittings as the struts between shelves. Nothing fancy in the design, and you could build this bottom up or from the top down.
Here are the parts you'll need:
- 4 x IKEA Limmnon Table Top (47 1/4 " x 23 5/8 x 1 3/8 ")
- 3" Caster Wheels with Brake
- 24 x 3/4" Galvanize Pipe Floor Flange
- 12 x 3/4" x 6" Galvanize Pipe Nipple
- #12 - 1.25" Flat Head Stainless Screws
- #12 - 1" Stainless Pan Head Screws
- Glue
Tools Needed:
- Phillips Screw Driver
- Power Drill with drill bits
- Wood glue
- Ruler
- Sharpie / Pencil
Step 1. Add Casters to Base
Using the 1" Stainless screws, I pre-drilled holes in the underside of the bottom layer. The IKEA table top has some reinforcement on the edges, but is mostly hollow in the middle of the board. Attach all 4 screws into each casters 2" from the corner edges.
Step 2: Attach Pipe Flanges
Flip the table over, and attach the pip flanges to the top side of the table. I chose to position them 7" off the edge of the table to provide storage for the smaller proofgrade materials on the sides, with ample storage in the middle for the standard 12"x20" proofgrade stock. Use the 1.25" Stainless flat head screws to attach each of the flanges, pre-drilling each hole and filling with glue.
Step 3: Build Your Tiers
Put the next tabletop level upside down on the floor, and put your first layer on top of that to mark you holes. Temporarily move the caster-layer aside to make room to pre-drill holes that were marked with a sharpie. Make sure that the flange is offset 45 degrees for the under shelf mounts, so the screws don't run into the screws from the top mount. Move the bottom layer back into position to attach, but keep in mind that the distance between the layers is too small to drill the screws in with a drill, and must be done by hand.
Repeat for each tier until the table is done.
