Recently my dad got a 4 bike rack to tow our motor bikes around. It is the only one that we found which supports 4 bikes and rated above 50 lbs per bike. The Volt RX 4x Hyperx bike rack is so heavy that we are having problem move it between our car and the garage. As such, he built a custom dolly to move it with ease.

Supplies

  • 2 x 2x4x8" wood stub (home depot)
  • 1 box of 3" deck screw (home depot)
  • 1 x 2" hitch extension (amazon)
  • 1 x 5/8" rod (about 12" length) (amazon)
  • 2 x 8" hand truck wheel (amazon)
  • 6 x 5/8" bore (amazon)
  • 4 x 6" caster wheel (amazon)

Total cost: Around $150

Create the 4 Wheel Dolly

Take those 2x4" and cut them as follow:

  1. 7 x 18" length
  2. 2 x 20" length
  3. 6 x 12" length

Then,

  1. Make a rectangle with those 2x18" and 2x20" - This is called the 18x20" rectangle.
  2. Make two additional rectangle with those 2x18" and 2x12" - This is called the 18x12" rectangle.
  3. For the two 18x12" rectangle, screw them together on the 18" side.
  4. Then, place the 12" on one of the side and screw them together. Do this for both side of the 12".
  5. On the 18x20" rectangle, screw in the 6" caster (on the 20" side).
  6. Place the 18x12" rectangle on top of the 18x20" rectangle. Make sure the side with 2 x 12" face downward.
  7. Screw down the top piece to the bottom piece 18x20" rectangle on the side at an angle
  8. Place a 18" length in the center and screw it down

At the end of this step, you should have a base (see picture above).

Create the Side Support

We will now create the side support as follow:

  1. Place the Hyperx at the center of the 18" length piece
  2. Cut two small 2x4" (around 6" length) and place them on the side of the Hyperx 2" square tube. Sandwich the 2" hitch at the side where there is the sign "Hyperx". See picture above.
  3. Then cut two small 2x4" on both side. This is to sandwich the two side at the Hyperx wing part which move up and down. See picture above.

This completes the side with the 4 x 6" caster wheel.

Create the Font Side

The front side is created as follow (see picture above):

  1. Take a 2" hitch extension
  2. Cut the 5/8" bore rod to 12" length
  3. Slide the 5/8" rod in one of the hole
  4. Slide two set of 5/8" bore on both side
  5. Slide the 8" wheels in between both side
  6. Slide the 5/8" bore on both side
  7. Now screw tight the 5/8" bore. Sandwish the wheel as well as the extension hitch to prevent them from moving side to side.
