How to Use Hot Glue to Attach a Project to a Lathe Chuck.
I will describe how I attach a woodturning project to a chuck using Hot Glue
Supplies
I use a high heat Glue Gun and Gorilla glue sticks. The glue has to be strong and hot enough to flow easily into the grooves.
Object
I want to attach this to my lathe so I can make it round. I need to use something that will hold it tight and not damage it.
I used a tree branch and made a block that will attach to the lathe chuck.
Attach the waste block to the lathe chuck.
Find Center of Project and Install It on the Lathe.
I do not apply any glue to the face of my block. I can never seem to get the part exactly perpendicular. If it is not flush with the block, it will pull away from the block and you will not be a happy camper.
Find the center of your project and use the tailstock to apply gentle pressure to the part.
You just need to apply enough pressure to gently hold the part in place.
Applying the Glue.
Be sure the glue is hot and flows easily. Place a small bead of glue around the entire block.
Let it cool for a few minutes and then apply another heavy bead on top of the first one.
The hot glue will be transparent, let the glue cure until it turns back to the original color. Don't touch the glue until you see it start to change color. While it is transparent, it will be HOT. Just ask me how I know.
Once it changes back to its original color, you can then turn the project to the desired shape.
Thinning the Bead of Glue to Get Ready to Remove the Project.
You can begin by turning off a small amount of the glue. It's not necessary, because the next step works very nicely.
Softening the Glue
Use a heat gun on high and revolve the project to warm up the entire bead of glue.
Removing the Project
Apply gentle pressure to the project as you heat the glue, it will easily fall off when the glue is warm enough.
Complete the Glue Removal
Reheat the glue and then use a chisel to remove any glue that is left on the project.
