How to Rocket Jump in Team Fortress 2
Have you ever seen Soldiers flying through the skies of Team Fortress 2 and wondered how they managed to do so? Well, they're using a technique known as 'rocket jumping'. Rocket jumping uses the explosion of Soldier's rockets to propel him into the air and traverse the battlefield quickly. The added mobility makes Soldier into one of the most mobile and versatile classes in Team Fortress 2.
Preparation
First thing's first, you'll want to go onto an empty server of 2Fort. Once you spawn in and pick Soldier, you'll want to navigate down to the front of your base.
Crouch Jumping
While at 'mid', you'll want to practice crouch jumping. To perform a crouch jump you'll need to hit your crouch key just before hitting the jump key. If done correctly you'll jump slightly higher than you would by just hitting the jump key.
Your First Rocket Jump
Now you're ready to attempt your first rocket jump. Begin by pointing your crosshair at your feet as shown above, then crouch jump and fire a rocket at your feet at the peak of your jump.
Catching Air
If/when done correctly, you should have seen something similar to this. Congratulations! You've just completed your first rocket jump.
The Trench Jump
Now you're ready for your first real jump. To begin this one walk towards the trench in the middle of the map and when you reach the edge turn around and fire a rocket at your feet.
Congrats!
If you managed to clear the trench, congrats! You're a natural! If you landed in the water, go back up to the surface and keep trying. You'll get it eventually, and now you're well on your way to being a great Soldier.
Continuing to Learn
If you've made it this far and want to continue to learn, I'd suggest looking for rocket jumping servers in TF2's server browser. Keep practicing and you'll improve in no time!
