How to Raise a Meat Goat for 4-H-Boer
I will be showing you how to feed, make shelter for, water, and care for your goat!
Supplies
- Hog panel
- Old dog house
- palette or OSB panels
- Purina goat grain
- A couple flakes of alfalfa
- A Boer goat
- feed bowls/water bowls
- shade(umbrella, shade cloth, tarp)
- Rebar
- bendy wire or very strong zip ties
Build Their Shelter
Make four even corners with the rebar. Cut the hog panel the the correct size to fit in the gap of the rebar. You can use either very strong zip ties or strong bendy wire to tie the hog panels the the Rebar posts. Leave a gap on one side of the shelter for the door. Use bendy wire to attach the palette or OSB to the rebar post. Make sure the door can swing! Put the doghouse in the middle, make sure everything is good and secure, then let you goat in! Don't forget to close the door!
Feeding Your Goat
Feed them 2.5%-3.0% of there body weight in one day. calculate that out and then measure. Say you figured out that you had to feed 3 pounds of grain a day, you would feed 1 1/2 pounds morning and night. Make sense? Go figure that out then feed your hungry little goat! give them 10 minutes to eat then what is left over after take away. make sure to change their water 3 times a day so they stay hydrated! It gets pretty chilly at night for the goats so before bed give each goat a handful of alfalfa to keep the warm!
Shading Your Shelter
use an umbrella a tarp, or anything you can find to shade your goat. when you put up your shade material make sure the goats can not jump up and eat it. If you are using and umbrella put it on the outside of the shelter. Make sure to put their water in the shade!
