How to Make the World's Best Dinner Rolls
Hi, Everyone! When I saw there was a bread challenge I knew I just had to enter these!
I first had them when I was around 5 and I have been hooked ever since. My grandma makes them every Thanksgiving and a few years back she showed me how to make them. Since I learned how to make these my family constantly asks me to make them, and when I do I have to stop them from eating them all in the same day!
I promise if you make these you (and your family) will love them. You might even want to make a double batch ;)
Supplies
- Water
- Flour~5 cups
- 1 Tablespoon salt
- 1 cup Crisco (vegetable shortening)
- 2 Tablespoons + 3 Teaspoons sugar
- 2 Packages Granular yeast
- 1 Cup Undiluted Evaporated Milk (Not as hard to find as it sounds)
- Roll Pans
- Grease for pans (I use Pam)
Making the Yeast Mix
This is the first step. While you prepare the next steps the yeast will eat the sugar and produce carbon dioxide (A process called Cellular Respiration, this will turn the mixture into a light airy foam we will mix in later.
In a small bowl mix together:
- 1/2 Cup Lukewarm Water
- 1 Teaspoon of Sugar
- 2 Packages Granular yeast
Should be mixed well but don't worry if you can't get all the yeast to dissolve.
Making the Shortening Mix
This is where you add the vegetable shortening, sugar, and salt.
First Get out a large mixing bowl. Then add:
- 2 Tablespoons+ 2 Teaspoons Sugar
- 1 Tablespoon Salt
- 1 Cup Vegetable Shortening (I use Crisco)
For best results cut up the shortening before putting it in the bowl, but this is not really necessary unless you don't have a microwave that can fit the bowl.
Now pour in 1 Cup of boiling water and stir until no solids remain. I usually stir with a knife so I can slice up the shortening while I mix it. If you can't get all the chunks to dissolve I usually just put it in the microwave for 30-60 seconds. And that usually melts them all.
Mixing in Evaporated Milk and Yeast Mixture
Now we will add the Evaporated milk and the yeast mixture to the Bowl with the Crisco mixture in it.
First add 1 Cup Undiluted Evaporated Milk
Next add in the yeast mixture and stir together.
Mix well
Add in Flour
This is where we will add in our flour and knead the dough
First add in 2 cups of flour and stir until it is about the consistency of cake batter
Next add in the 3rd then 4th cup of flour, it should begin to hold shape.
Put a half cup of flour on a countertop surface and pour the dough on to it.
Add some flour to your hands and knead the dough for about 3-5 min, adding flour occasionally.
Once the dough bounces back when you poke it, roll it into a ball and put the bowl over it (upside down)
Forming the Rolls + Rising
This is one of the best (and most time consuming) features of these rolls, the 3 segments. These allow the roll to be pulled apart into 3 parts which make them go great with some butter.
First grease the pans, I use Pam spray
Next form the balls, 3 for each roll. To do this pinch the top and pull back until you have a small ball with a smooth top, this is hard to explain and just takes some practice to get right.
Repeat until you run out of dough.
Then put a very light-weight cloth over them and place in a warm area, let rise until the rolls about double in size.
Baking Them
This is the most straight-forward step, bake for about 15 minutes at 385 Degrees F or until the tops are golden brown.
If you are bringing them to a party bake for about 8 mins then when you arrive put them in for 5-7 minutes 385 to finish cooking them + warm them up.
Enjoy!
Now to enjoy them!
If you have family (Or live with other people) time to hide some for yourself before they're gone ;)
These go great with butter!
They also taste great if you split them apart and toast them (oven on broil or toaster oven) and put some butter on them. If you make these you definitely have to try that.
If you have any questions, Tips, Tricks, or anything else please say in the comments, I would love to know how they turned out for you!
