Making your own scrunchie at home is a fun, easy, and budget-friendly DIY project that requires minimal materials and no sewing machine! Whether you're looking to create a custom accessory to match your outfits, repurpose fabric scraps, or give a thoughtful handmade gift, making scrunchies by hand is a perfect way to get creative. With just a few simple tools—like fabric, elastic, and a needle and thread—you can craft stylish scrunchies in no time. Best of all, it’s a beginner-friendly project, so even if you’re new to sewing, you can make a cute and functional scrunchie without any hassle. Ready to get started? Let’s dive into the steps!

Materials You’ll Need:

Fabric: Choose any fabric you like – cotton, satin, velvet, or even old t-shirts!

Elastic : You can adjust the length if you have thicker or thinner hair.

Needle & Thread: Any color that matches your fabric.

Scissors: For cutting your fabric and thread.

Pins (optional): To hold your fabric in place.

Safety Pin : A medium to large safety pin works best for this.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Cut the Fabric:

Cut your fabric into a rectangle (4” x 24”) or (10cm x 60cm) .You can use any fabric you have lying around, even an old shirt or scarf!

Mark the Border Lines :

Use your fabric chalk or marker to lightly draw a line 1/4 inch or 1cm from one long edges, and both short edges.

Pin Long Edge with other edge :

After folding the fabric, pin along of the long edges to hold the two sides of the fabric together.

As you pin, make sure the edges of the fabric are aligned and smooth, so that no puckering or shifting occurs during sewing.

Sew the Tube:

Using your needle and thread, hand-stitch along the long edge of the fabric, leaving a small seam allowance. Make small, tight stitches to ensure the seam holds well. You’ll want to sew it so the two long edges are together, creating a long tube of fabric. Don’t worry about making perfect stitches – this part will be hidden inside the scrunchie.

Turn it Inside Out:

Gently turn your fabric tube inside out so the right side is on the outside.

Close the End:

Fold the fabric Short Edges outside, then sew the opening closed.

Add the Elastic:

Use a safety pin to thread your (7”) or (17cm) piece of elastic through the fabric tube. Once it’s all the way through, sew the ends of the elastic together.

Sew the Opening Closed Using an Invisible Stitch

Start by inserting the needle under the fabric fold (inside the tube) and bring the needle out through the fabric at the very edge. This will hide the first stitch inside the tube.

Work your way around the entire opening, making small, even stitches. This method ensures that the stitch is nearly invisible, so no stitching will show on the outside of the scrunchie.

Scrunch It Up!

Finally, pull the fabric to gather around the elastic. Your scrunchie is now ready to wear!
