How to Make a Emergency Boat for Two People(Or Racing)
This is a step by step on how to build a cardboard boat in an emergency using your household items. Please be noted that this is for a school project and I can't guarantee that it will survive in a flash flood and I can't take responsibility for death and injury. When you make this boat please do it very carefully and precisely or it might not work more. Making boats using cardboards is possible if you think about the center of gravity and about how things float. Also, you need to think about the characteristics of each of the materials. One more thing you should be noted is that my drawing isn't the best and you might have trouble with it. (The picture on the top is the cardboard boat our group made and it won))
Supplies
You will need a bunch of cardboard (at least 15) and you will be needing one that has at least 2m long. You will also need 5 or more toilet rolls, 4~6 pet bottles, and a 40L garbage bag. For the tools, you will need scissors and duct tape.
- More than 15 cardboards
- 5 or more toilet rolls
- 4~6 pet bottles
- 40L garbage bag
- Scissors
- Duct tape
Caution
Please be careful not to cut your fingers while making this. I think that you guys know how to use scissors well but please be careful.
Make the Front and Back Walls(Bottom) of the Boat
In this step, you are going to make the bottom of the boat and the front and the back wall for the boat. For the bottom, you will tape 3 cardboard(length:2m and width1.5m) together. These cardboards stack will be called cardboard A. To make the front wall, you will need a 1m tall, 1.5m long cardboard and use this cardboard to make the front wall. You will tape this cardboard on the edge of cardboard A and use 3 tapes or more to stick it together. You will also do this for the back wall.
Material:
- Cardboards
- Duct tape
Tape the Side Walls
After you finish making the front and the back walls, get two 1m tall, 2m long cardboards. Then tape it to the longer edge of cardboard A. Use 4 or more tapes to fully stick it together. Then do it for the other side. Then put all the walls up and stick them together using 3 or more tapes like those in the picture above.
Materials
- Cardboards
- Duct tape
Make a Plastic Sheet
Get 5~6 40L garbage bags. Use scissors to cut one side of the garbage bag and then spread it so you can make a plastic sheet. Do this 5 to 6 times and please be careful not to rip it in the process.
Materials
- 40l garbage bags
- Scissors
Covering the Boat With the Plastic Sheet
You are going to cover the boat using plastic sheets. This is because cardboard gets wet and it will break. Put 1~2 plastic sheets at the bottom. Use as much tape to tape them well. Use 3~4 plastic sheets to cover the walls of the boat. But make sure to have one plastic sheet left.
Materials:
- Duct tape
- Plastic sheets
Putting Pet Bottles
Flip the boat over so you can see the bottom. If you have 6 pet bottles, you can put them all in the middle or put 4 in the corner and put two in the middle. If you have more than 6, cover the bottom with pet bottles. If you have only 4, put them in the middle or put them in the corner.
Materials:
- Pet bottles
- Duct tape
Covering the Bottom Again
After putting the pet bottles at the bottom of the boat, make sure to cover the bottom again using a plastic sheet. This is just to be sure the pet bottles don't come off and the boat is more waterproof. You should tape it very tightly because it might come off in the water.
Materials:
- Plastic sheets
- Duct tapes
Making the Paddle's Handle
You are going to put aside the boat for a moment and focus on making the paddle's handle. You are going to be using 5 or more empty toilet rolls. You will be taping those together from the inside and also outside to make sure that they don't come off when you are on the boat.
Materials
- Toilet rolls
- Duct tape
Making the Paddle's Head
Next, you will be making the paddle's head. You will be using 5 cardboards that have a length of 1m, and a width of 1m. You will be cutting out shapes like the one in the picture above. You will make 5 of them and you will stick them together very tightly using the duct tapes. If you want to, cover the paddle's head using a plastic bag and make sure to tie it tightly so the water doesn't come in and make the paddle's head wet.
Materials
- Cardboards
- Scissors
- Duct tape
Making the Paddle
You will tape the paddle's handle and also the paddle's head to make the paddle. Please make sure to tape them well so they don't come off when you are riding the boat.
Materials
- Paddle's head
- Paddle's handle
Riding on the Boat
When riding the boat make sure you will go in from the side of the boat. The lighter person should go first into the boat and the second person should be holding the boat. After the first person goes in, the second person should go in quickly and the first person who got in the boat should be holding the boat so the boat doesn't shake. Also, make sure that the heavier person should go close to the middle and the lighter person should go more front to keep balance on the boat.
