How to Make a A-Frame Christmas Tree

Around this time of year, it's become a tradition to come up with an alternative Christmas tree idea. This year is no exception!

The inspiration for this year's tree is from a visit to Epcot at Walt Disney World. Steph took the boat ride in the Land Pavilion and saw their version of a ladder tree, which became the model for ours. Take a look at how it came together!

We are using readily available materials including (1) 12' x 1" x 10" board, (6) 1" x 2" strips, and a package of hinges. We are using a lot of different tools because we have them, but this can be made with a simpler assortment of tools. Use what you have.

We cut three shelves from the 12' board. The finished lengths are 4 feet, 3 1/2 feet, and 2 1/2 feet. The legs and cross bars were cut from the wood strip. The legs are 70" finished and the (8) cross bars are each 13".

Once all the pieces were cut, we laid them on the floor to figure out the distance needed between the shelves. Note: in this picture there are four shelves and the legs are longer than 70". In the end, we decided the tree was too tall and ended up making it shorter and eliminating one of the shelves.

Prior to assembly, all the pieces were lightly sanded. We measured and marked the placement of the cross bars and glued and brad nailed them into place. The cross bars are placed 1" from each other although, 1 1/2" would be better.

We used a wood pre-conditioner on the shelves before staining. The tops and bottoms of the shelves were stained. The frame was painted with a chalk paint. After the paint dried we added the hinge. This will allow the tree to easily fold for storage.

Here's where we realized the ladder was way too tall! We cut off the top 12" and then it was perfect!

This alternative Christmas tree is perfect for the holidays but can be used throughout the year for collectibles or plants or simply stored away for next year.
