Supplies

All you need is a computer with at least 8gb of RAM and a valid installation of Minecraft.

Install Java

A requirement for many mods is Java. Since Minecraft is coded in Java, all mods are also coded in Java, required the code base to be installed to function properly.

Go to https://java.com/en/download/ and click the red "Agree and Start Free Download" button.

Then, run the .exe file and the Java installer will take you the rest of the way through the installation process.

Make Sure Minecraft Is Installed

If you already have Minecraft installed, you can skip this step.

If you do not have the Java edition of Minecraft installed, you cannot use mods.

Go to www.minecraft.net and install Minecraft. If you already own Minecraft, sign in to your account and download Minecraft.

If you do NOT own Minecraft, create and account and purchase Minecraft to install it.

Download Forge

Most mods work off of Forge, an API (Application Programming Interface) that allows mods to interact with Minecraft.

Go to https://files.minecraftforge.net/net/minecraftforge/forge/ to install Forge for any version of Minecraft you want to download mods for.

DO NOT CLICK ON ANY ADVERTISEMENTS: Only click on the "Installer" button and the "skip" button on the next page. Do not run anything other than the .jar file that is installed.

Download Mods

Download any mods of your choice. I would recommend CurseForge, as it has most mods and allows for easy filtering of content to find what you want. For now, just save them to your Downloads folder so they are all in one place to move later.

To install a specific version of a mod, click on the mod name and navigate to files. Under files, you can see previous versions of the mod for specific versions of Minecraft.

Download the version of the mod that matches the version of Forge you installed.

Launch Minecraft to Open Mod Folder

When you installed Forge in the step above, it created its own instance in the Minecraft Launcher.

Launch the Minecraft Launcher and select the "Installations" tab. Click on the File Icon on the Forge Instance.

Once your file explorer opens, take all the mods you installed and move them to the "mods" folder.

Once this is done, you can launch the Forge Instance of Minecraft to play with mods!

Alternatively, Download a Modpack Browser

Modpack browsers make it easier to install large "packs" of mods that have been created by others. These packs can just be a grouping of their favorite mods or mods curated to provide a certain experience to the player.

For this Instructable, we will show you how to install MultiMC.

Go to https://multimc.org/ and download the development version of MultiMC.

Then, login to your Mojang or Microsoft account on the top right.

Once this is done, click on the "Add Instance" button to add any ModPack from the main distributors.
