How to Do a Fishtail Braid
- Make sure to read all the instructions carefully before beginning.
- This hairstyle is a good casual look or can be dressed up for more of an elegant style.
- Depending on how long and thick the hair is, this braid may be time-consuming.
- The braid does not have to be as tight as shown in the photo.
- With practice comes improvement.

Gather Supplies
- Hair tie
- Brush
Brush Hair
Brush hair starting from ends and working your way up until all the tangles are out
Part Hair in Half
Separate the hair vertically into two equal sections
Hold Each Section With Separate Hands
- Grab the left side of the hair with your left hand-palm facing you
- Grab the right side of the hair with your right hand-palm facing you
Release Right Section
Release the right section of hair while still holding on to the left section
Grab a Small Piece of Hair From Right Side
Grab a quarter of an inch wide piece of hair from the outside of the right section
Bring Small Piece to Left Section
- Bring the small piece of hair from the right side over and transfer it to the left section
- Grab that small piece with your left hand along with the rest of the left section
- That small piece now becomes part of the left section whole
Grab Right Section of Hair
Grab the right section of hair with your right hand-palm facing you
Release Left Section
Release the left section of hair, freeing your left hand, while still ensuring that the previous piece stays with the left section
Grab a Small Piece of Hair From Left Side
Grab a quarter-inch wide piece of hair from the outside of the left section
Bring Small Piece to Right Section
- Bring the small piece of hair from the left side over and transfer it to the right section
- Grab that small piece with your right hand along with the rest of the right section
- That small piece now becomes part of the right whole
Grab Left Section
Grab the left section of hair with your left hand-palm facing you
Release Right Section
Release the right section of hair, freeing your right hand, while still ensuring that the previous piece stays with the right section
Repeat Steps 6 Through 13
Repeat steps 6 through 13 until you reach the ends of the hair
Secure the Braid
Wrap a hair tie tightly around the braid about two inches from the ends of the hair
Loosen the Braid (optional)
- Pinch the left side of the braid with your left hand and pinch the right side of the braid with your right hand-palm facing you
- Pull the braid in an outward direction starting from the top of the braid down to the end by the hair tie
- Repeat this step until the look that you want is reached
