How to Create Wood Finish Using Paint
Hi Instructables! Have you seen "Real or Cake" videos on your social media feeds? These videos have gone viral tricking pretty much every viewer and it is really amazing how a pastry expert can make a cake look too real.
I have a painting technique to share that you can add to your decor to enhance and match your desired design. With this method, you can get imitate an authentic light wood finish using paint colors!
Supplies
- Wood Wall Art
- Paint Brushes
- Shop Towels
- Water Misting Spray Bottle
- Tan Chalk Mineral Paint
- Brown Chalk Mineral Paint
Prep & Clean
I started with this set of carved wall art that I bought from our local thrift store. Whenever you are painting a piece, it is important to clean it to ensure paint adhesion. And since this wall arts are already clean, I started preparing my paint.
Paint Light Base Coat
I painted the pieces with two coats of medium-toned tan chalk mineral paint. It is the perfect base coat for the finish that I am looking for which has a light and warm tone. If you want to have a darker wood finish, you can experiment with a piece of plywood or any cardboard before doing it on your project.
Paint the Darker Shade Paint
When the base coat was completely dry, I painted the wall art with creamy brown chalk mineral paint that looks like Chocolate.
Paint Wash
This is the part where we transform the paint to look like wood. After painting the pieces brown and while it is still wet, I sprayed them with water using a water mister bottle and wipe them off using a shop towel to create a wash. Repeat the depending on how light or dark you want the finish to look.
Adding Texture
I used a chip brush and lightly rubbed the brown paint using the tips of the bristles. I next used a shop towel to remove any leftover paint from the paintbrush tips. I lightly dry-brushed the high spots while moving in a single direction. This creates a little more texture and authenticity to this piece.
Finished Look!
And here is the finished look! They look so much better than the all-black plastic look. You can any this technique to any piece that you like as long as it can be painted! I hope it inspired you to try!
