Homemade Yarn Pom-Poms With a Loom!

Instructables pom-pom main-photo.jpg

Making pom-poms is a great project to pass the time. They're also a great addition to a homemade hat, a game of toss, or a cool pom-pom teddy bear for a Christmas present!

Whatever the reason you might have, in this Instructable you'll learn how to use a circular loom to make some amazing little pom-poms to achieve your little pom-pom goals.

We'll start by making the main pom-pom on the loom, then we'll make the middle that holds the whole thing together, and finish by taking it off the loom and cutting it into a pom-pom shape.

What are you waiting for? Read on!

Supplies

To make your pom-pom you'll need:

  • Big thick yarn for the main part of your pom-pom.
  • Thinner yarn for the middle of your pom-pom. This is the what holds it together.
  • A small "flower" loom to make your pom-pom on. You can find one at Walmart or Amazon. The steps to make yarn flowers aren't very different from making pom-poms, so that's why we're using this type of loom.
  • A needle to weave the middle.
  • (optional) a yarn hook to help get the pom-pom off the loom.
  • Scissors to cut the yarn.

First we're going to wrap the yarn around the loom to make the main part of the pom-pom (click the pictures for descriptions).

1. Start by making a slip knot with the end of your thick yarn and put it onto the peg that's sticking out of the loom. This peg is called the "Holding Peg". You can also wrap your yarn around the peg a few times instead.

2. Take your yarn and wrap it around the peg on the opposite side of the holding peg, to the right.

3. Finally wrap the yarn around the starting peg. This should make a figure 8 shape.

4. Now rotate the loom counterclockwise(🔄) one peg, so your most recent looped peg is on the bottom nearest to you. This will be the next starting peg.

5. Repeat these steps by wrapping your yarn all the way around the loom until you've wrapped the loom around 4-5 times. Cut off your yarn leaving a few inches.

6.Now take your first yarn end off the holding peg and push it through the opposite side of the loom. Repeat with the other end, then tie both ends together in a double knot.

Great! Now that you've finished wrapping the main pom-pom, let's make the middle!

1. First take your second thinner yarn and cut about an arms length. Carefully thread the yarn through your needle until it's about halfway through the yarn.

2. Turn the loom over and make sure the Holding Peg is facing you.

3. Thread the needle through the loom near the Holding Peg, leaving a few inches of yarn on the backside. Then feed it through the opposite side, between the two pegs. You should have a stripe across the front side of the loom and the needle and the yarn ends on the back.

4. Turn the loom counterclockwise(🔄), and repeat the steps above until you make a complete circle.

5. Next, make sure the needle is on the backside with the other end, and cut off the needle with scissors.

6. Finally take both ends and tie them together in a double knot, and your done!

Now that you have the middle done, let's take the pom-pom off the loom and finish it up!

Cutting the Pom-pom

Let's finish the Pom-Pom!

1. Get your Loom Hook and pull off the loops on each peg.

2. Once your pom-pom is off the loom, use your scissors to cut through each loop until all your loops are cut.

3. Toss your pom-pom into a ball shape, and trim off any extra yarn.

You're now done with your pom-pom! You can attach it to a hat or leave as it is.
