Green Moss World

I was always excited about green moss walls and really wanted this.

But they usually had an extremely high price.

After a little research on the Internet I came across preserved moss,

which should retain the lush green in the future.

I ordered 2kg of moss from Amazon, grabbed some wood from old projects and started...

Print It, Glue It, Mark It

The first step was to find a suitable world map that shows only the contours of each country.

Then I used the freeware PosteRazor to select my size. The program scales the image to the appropriate size and divides them on standard A4 sheets so that they could be printed with a normal printer.

Now I just stuck the sheets with tape and marked the countries which I want to have later on the wall.

Since there are many small islands you should decide how detailed you want to have the whole thing.

Sawing Time

In the next step, I glued the paper to the wood panel.

Then I sawed with a band saw and a fretsaw (which was much more comfortable with the fine contours).

Coloring Edges

Since the light edges of the wood were visible even after gluing on the moss, I painted them with acrylic paint beforehand.

Here it is important to make sure that the shade of green is similar to the color of the moss.
I would recommend to choose a slightly darker shade, as this creates a slightly 3D effect.

Hot Glue and a Fresh Haircut

Now came the most challenging task of the project.

In the beginning I glued the moss with wood glue on the wood continente.

But again and again some moss fell off which was not sufficiently covered with glue.

I tried an alternative - hot glue <3

This allowed you to work much faster and the moss held better.

I tried to sort the preserved moss into different shades of green.

Then I tried to glue mountains, snow landscapes and deserts with light green and the rest with darker.

What was more or less visible.

After the world was greened I gave the contours a sharp cut.

This gave the contours a better appearance.

After I had glued the moss I noticed that the background color was too bright, so I painted all the edges with darker color again.

Bring It to the Wall

In the larger continents I drilled holes to bring them later with nails to the wall.

To bring the exact position of each country on the wall, I printed out the paper template again.

Then I marked the holes on the template to bring them afterwards to the wall.

I stuck all the little islands to the wall with double-sided tape.
