Global Warming Ski Project (Mailbox)

20160301_161159.jpg

..........................Its a year of sheer ice in Alaska.................................

:-)

Snow is a dream of the past apparently, so we are coming up with other uses for our old faithful equipment.

:-)

After sliding into the newspaper stand with my truck the other day. I decided to get a little creative with fixing my newspaper stand. I knew these 20 year old skis would come in handy some day!

:-)

I did not think ahead to doing an instructable on it unfortunately, If I had I would have definitely done a better job with the pics.

:-)

.......................................Sorry about that..........................................

...........................Got Questions? let me know!..................................

:-)

It is easy to figure out just from looking at it probably, So.......... here goes!

Collect Your Ski's and Mailboxes!

.........................Find yourself an old pair of skis.................................

..............Doesn't matter if they are x country or downhill. ................

...........................Could also use snowboards also.............................

..........................Find yourself newspaper boxes................................

..................( you could add additional ones if desired)......................

Drill Your Holes :-)

I cut 18 inch boards that were 1 inch thick. After cutting them I placed the newspaper box on top of them. Reached into it and used a marker to mark the spots where bolts would hold it to the board.

:-)

Put the mailboxes to the side

:-)

Proceed to drill out the holes (I used 1/4" bit I think) and 2 inch bolts. (I needed to put washers on the bolts to keep them from pulling through).

To Ski or Not to Ski

Lay down both skis (making sure that they are level with each other) (Lay them upside down over a couple of two by 4's if they heave large boot attachments on them. It will be easier to write on the back. After marking the spots where you want to connect the 18 inch pieces of wood.

:-)

You then use a drill bit to drill two holes across the lines on each ski (This will just make it easier to screw them to the wood holding the mailbox. You should end up with 4 holes on each ski. Approximately 10 inches between the two sets of two.

:-)

Mark across both of them with a right angle at the height that you want the mailboxes to be. Make sure that there is space to fit one above the other.

Attach the Main Parts

Drill 6 holes on the 18 inch pieces of wood (1st pic)

:-)

Lay the 18 inch pieces of wood on their small edge.

:-)

Put one ski across them making sure to align them with the 2 screw holes.

:-)

Slowly screw in screws (I used 1 1/2 inch screws) (2nd pic)

:-)

Turn entire thing over and screw the other side on also.

Screw Them Together

Using 2 inch screws (with washers) (2nd pic) attach the newspaper boxes to the 18 inch pieces of wood (1st pic)

:-)

Lay entire thing on side and attache a couple pieces of scrap two by 4"s between the bottom end of the ski's.

:-)

(I drilled holes in the ski's first which makes it much easier).

:-)

This gives it a better area to balance on and when rocks are loaded on top gives it more stability. (3rd pic)

Set Er Up!

Find a giant planter / 50 gallon drum/ garbage can, or some other large container

:-)

...................................Find LOTS of Big Rocks!!!!!..............................

:-)

Get help leveling the mailbox while one person puts in the rocks. Put in enough rocks to hold things steady!

:-)

Put it on the side of the driveway and hope that no one else takes it out while sliding backwards down sheer ice!
