Ghost Lanterns
Easy to make Halloween decor. Upcycle grocery bags and letter stickers, dust off that old camping lantern, grab some tape and a pair of scissors, then ta-da...a spooky fun ghost lantern. It's a festive porch decoration or a useful lantern while trick-or-treating.
Supplies
- a battery or solar lantern
- two plastic grocery bags
- letter/number stickers or a black marker
- double-sided sticky tape
- scissors
Cut the Bag
Cut off the bottom seam and then make a slit on one side of the grocery bag. Then cut off the store brand label, if there is one. Now, you are left with one long piece of the white grocery bag.
Add Tape Around the Cylinder
Add double-sided sticky tape to the upper edge around the side of the lantern.
Add the Plastic to the Taped Lantern
Cover the lantern with the grocery bag by taping the bottom of the grocery bag (the longest and straightest edge of the bag) to the upper side of the lantern.
Create the Bottom of the Ghost
Cut off the grocery bag handles and cut the flowing end into strips. Shape the flowing ends of the grocery bag into ghostly tendrils. Wrap the lantern twice using both grocery bags.
Add Eyes and a Mouth
Add stickers for the eyes and mouth. If you don't have stickers a black permanent marker also works great! I used the inside of a zero sticker for the mouth and the inside of D's stickers for the eyes.
It's Alive!
Turn the lantern on. Hang it from a string. Turn off the lights at night and watch it come alive. Make sure your lantern has power.
My favorite lantern to use is a Luci Inflatable Lantern. If it is hanging outside and the sun is out, the battery will get recharged so that it has power at night. Just place it on the lowest setting and it should work similarly to a landscape light. To learn more about this lantern and to see photos visit:
