Forklift With Upgraded Dashboard Display Screen
We are Kailyn Ramos, Philip Kim, Zach Mcgee, and Mario Frausto from San Jose State University, and we designed and modeled a new dashboard screen for the Toyota Forklift.
We'll go through our design process and show you what we did.

Project Objective
The design problem we were trying to address was Human Machine Interference. We wanted to focus on how the controls and the flow of information from human to machine could be improved
Some initial observations about the current forklift model were
- Forklift dashboard looked outdated
- Forklift didn't have many car-like amenities
- Display screen was small and difficult to see
- Display doesn't show a lot of information at once
Ideas to Solve the Problem
In our first brainstorming session, we took the observations we made about the current forklift model and thought of ways we could improve upon them.
Narrowing Down the Solution
Narrowing our ideas down, we decided to go with a touchscreen display on the forklift dashboard. Although we decided on our idea, we didn't know how it was going to look. To figure this out, we each drew up own our concepts.
Final Concept
From the idea sketches we had, we collectively decided on our final concept, which would be a touchscreen display that would pop out from the dashboard that could be adjusted to change its viewing angle.
We chose this design for a multitude of reasons including:
- Gives the forklift a simple, but modern upgrade
- Adjustable features would allow drivers to move and easily see the display screen from any angle
- Touchscreen capabilities easily allow adjustments to the forklift settings to be made
Later while doing our final CAD model, we realized that the tablet would need to be connected to the forklift. To remedy this issue, we decided to add T-shaped slots and clamps. The T-shaped slots, which are connected to the bottom of the holder, are capable of sliding into the clamps, which are connected to the forklift. This solution also allows the tablet to be easily replaced in the event that it needs maintenance.
Final Design
Every aspect of the dashboard display screen we modeled ourselves. Every screw in the assembly, to the clamps that would connect the tablet to the forklift was modeled and converted to Fusion360. The photos above show the completed assembly, some of the details, and an exploded view of the parts would connect.
