Fondant Cake Topper of Sri Lanka
The Island of Sri lanka presented to you as an edible fondant topper! My inspiration for this idea came from Sri Lanka's elevation map.
The well known, Adam's peak lies 2000m above sea level. Depending on what you believe, it is where prophet Adam first set foot or where Lord Buddha gained elightenment.
It is so easy to make and a fun way to brush up on some geography :D

Supplies
You will need:
1. Paper template
2. Fondant
3. Hard fondant (just leave out a piece of fondant at room temperature for a day)
4. Buttercream
5. Gel food coloring
6. Sugar rock candy
7. Rolling pin
8. Cookie decorating tools (optional)

Preparing the Template
Trace out or get a print out of the desired country. I just traced out Sri Lanka using a reference image.
Coloring the Fondant
Add a drop of green dye to a small portion (size of a walnut) of fondant. You may need more fondant depending on the size of your map. Mix the green and white fondant a few times. Do not over mix as we are trying to create a marble effect.
Rolling Out Fondant
Once you have mixed in the two colors, roll out the fondant and cut out the map using the previously prepared template.
You can stop here! However, I wanted to show the plains and elevations of Lanka.
Creating Elevation
With your reference map nearby, use bits of fondant and hardened fondant to create mountains.
Break up a bit of hard fondant, brush the under side with a little water and stick it. Instead of leaving the mountain white, I brushed it with some green gel food coloring.
You can also shape a mountain from soft fondant and paint it. You can stick rock candy to create texture as well.
You can also stop here but I decided to take it one step further!

Painting With Buttercream
I wanted to create texture and also feature the colors of the Sri Lankan flag, marroon, orange and green.
To plain buttercream, add in some food coloring until the desired color is achieved. Use the round tipped decorating tool to dab or blot on buttercream to the map.
Basically, green represents the regions with high elevation. The coastal region represented with marroon are plains.
Tip: A clean paint brush or aluminum foil can also be used to create texture with buttercream.

Adding Detail
I decided to make a miniature flag with paper and a toothpick to mark Adam's peak.
In the same manner, you can highlight important areas on your map! Leave the topper out for a few days until it hardens. Yes, the buttercream will harden up too.
Caution: Do not place it in the fridge as the condensation will dissolve the sugar in the fondant.
As you can see now, the possibilities are endless. You can use the marbled fondant to create the continents. You can take it a step further by adding more details using hard fondant and buttercream.
