Easy and Quick Cardboard Boat to Survive the Flash Flood

20220126_121715.jpg

Have you ever experienced a flash flood? This instructable will tell you an easy and fast way for making a cardboard boat to survive a flash flood. Also, you can make this with just 1 big piece of cardboard, Waterproof tape(Plastic tape), and some measuring. So this design only uses household objects. I designed this boat using the knowledge that I gathered from science and design classes. Science class helped me understand how to make the boat float on water by learning about the center of gravity, the mass, etc. The design class helped me understand how to design the boat by learning about parts of the boat. The combination of these two subjects made this project possible. For example, I was able to use the knowledge that I got from science for making the design of the boat. The strength of learning this through design and science was that the combination was AWESOME. I was able to learn most of the things about the boat, but there were some limitations. The limitation was that we couldn't learn about how to move the boat which most people knew. This instructable communicates the knowledge of these to subjects because it tells you about how to safely ride the boat, and shows you the design of the boat through the picture. I made this design fast and easy to make because flash flood happens really quickly.

If you're confused when you draw the lines on your cardboard, you can look at the picture and the colored lines are the lines that you have to draw in that certain step.

Supplies

  • Cardboard that is 150+cm long, and 130+cm wide
  • 2L Pet bottles x6
  • Cutter
  • Marker of a pen
  • Roll of plastic tape x2
  • Meter stick

Drawing the Base of the Boat

First, you will be starting to draw the net of the boat. Draw a rectangle that is 75cm long and 50cm wide on the cardboard. Make sure to draw this in the middle of your cardboard.

Marking the Head of the Boat

After you draw a rectangle, mark the middle of the 50cm side then draw a 10cm (streight)line to the top of the rectangle. If you're confused, the colored line on the picture is the line that you have to draw so you can look at the picture.

Since you have drawn a 10 cm line, you will draw 2 more lines from that 10cm line. Draw straight lines from the end of 10cm point, to 2 of the closest corner of a rectangle. Now, you should have a rectangle and a triangle stuck together as you see in the picture.

Checking If You're on Track

In this stage, you should see something like this picture. Check if you're on track.

Drawing an Outline of the Walls

This is where things get confusing so make sure to check the picture and see the colored lines. Now, you will start outlining the walls. The outline of the walls should be drawn in dotted lines so that you don't get confused when you cut out the net of the boat. The wall should be 35cm tall so make a rectangle for each side.

*Make sure to draw this in dotted lines.

Checking If You're on Track

Since the last step was pretty confusing, check if you did right on this step by looking at the picture above.

Cutting Out the Net

In this stage, you will cut out the net of the boat since you have finished drawing out the net. Use your cutter to cut out along the dotted lines. Don't cut out normal lines since those are for folding out the boat. Be careful when you're using the cutter(I don't want you to cut out your fingers).

Making/folding the Boat

After you cut out the net of the boat, you will be folding the net. Fold the black lines that are in between the wall and the deck(where you ride) of the boat. If you don't know where to fold, look at the picture above to see where to fold(highlighted lines are the lines to fold along).

Sticking the Walls Togeather

After you fold the walls, the walls, the walls will fall back down again so you have to put the plastic tape in between the walls. Put as much tape as you can, but don't use all of them because you will have to use them in the next step. In the picture above, you can see the highlighted parts. Those parts are the place where you have to put the tape. You can tape from the other side of that highlighted part.

Making the Hull of the Boat

Finally, you will be using your pet bottles. Flip your boat then stick 3 pet bottles for the left and right sides. Use at least 2 tapes for each pet bottle. Make sure that the caps of the pet bottles are on them. Now your boat is done!

How to Ride a Boat

When you get on the boat, try your best to get into the middle of the boat so that the boat won't flip. It's easier to get on the boat if you get on from the side of the boat.
