Easy Mobile Game Steering Wheel
I wanted to create something simple, easy and fun to get back into Instructables, so I came up with this little device!
Scrolling Google images revealed a mobile racing wheel isn't a new idea, however I continued with the project as everything DIY I found seemed to be overly complicated, so I kept this nice and simple.
Supplies
Materials
- Corrugated cardboard
- Spray paint (or your preferred means of colouring cardboard)
Tools
- Craft knife
- Hot glue gun
- Printer
Get Yourself a Steering Wheel
I've picked a Formula 1 steering wheel for two reasons: It is a suitable shape for a phone since it's somewhat rectangular, and I have been rather invested in F1 recently 😅
Here is a template I've cut out from an F1 steering wheel diagram, in light grey to lower ink consumption.
Cut It Out!
Carefully, carefully cut out the printed outline of the steering wheel on paper. Then trace the outline of your phone on top of the white rectangle and cut that out.
Cut It Out, Part II
Now that you've got your handy little template, tape it onto your corrugated cardboard and cut out enough layers that when stacked on top of each other, are equivalent to the thickness of your phone.
After that, cut out one more layer BUT don't cut out your phone outline. This will serve as the back of the steering wheel, making it more rigid as well as stopping the phone from falling out.
Finishing Touches
Congratulations! Your steering wheel is now together, but plain cardboard looks a little bland. I've decided to spray paint mine black, and put on the Formula 1 logo (just printed and cut out of paper), however you could add buttons, switches, and more if you wish! Just make sure the paint is dry before you put your phone in.
Finished!
And with that, you're done!
Did you make it? Do you have any mobile games you enjoy playing? Let me know!
