Double Rainbow Greeting Card

It's getting a little late for Christmas, but that's okay, cards work for Valentine's Day too. Here's a full-on double rainbow pop-up card for someone special in your life.

P.S. If anyone out there doesn't get the joke, a quick YouTube search on 'Double Rainbow' should explain it.

Materials

It's easy to make a double rainbow pop-up card. All you need is:

My handy double rainbow graphic (below as a Word document), or make your own
A rectangular piece of very light cardboard the same width as the big rainbow (6 5/8", 168mm for me, yours may differ)
Glue
Craft knife
Ruler
A greeting card, or you can make your own

Aligning the Cardboard

On the reverse side of the rainbow graphic, mark a straight line indicating the bottom of the rainbow, and make two vertical marks showing where the rainbow ends. This is important for lining up the cardboard later.

Aligning the Cardboard, Part Two

With your piece of cardboard that is exactly the width of the bigger rainbow, mark a line 1/2" from the bottom, parallel to the bottom edge. Mark another line dividing the cardboard in half vertically. Gently score this vertical line with a craft knife (try not to cut all the way through. It's not a disaster if you do, but it's much easier if you don't).

P.S. You don't need to bother writing the measurements on yours.

Gluing the Cardboard

Using glue that is good for paper and won't ruch it all up, glue the cardboard to the back of the rainbow. I used Elmer's white glue for this, since that's what I had on hand, but it wasn't ideal. Maybe a glue stick would be better?

Align the cardboard so that the line 1/2" from the bottom of the cardboard overlays the line at the bottom of the rainbow, and the vertical edges match your vertical marks on the graphic.

Cutting Out the Rainbow

When the glue is dry, carefully cut out the rainbow with sharp scissors. The bottom 1/2" of the cardboard will form the two flaps that attach the rainbow to the greeting card. Gently score the flaps so they will fold back. GENTLY! If you cut them off now you will have to start again.Cut out a little notch in the flaps.

Gluing the Rainbow to the Card

Align the rainbow on the open greeting card so it is right in the center and glue the tabs down. You want to make sure the rainbow is far enough down the card that it doesn't stick out the top when the card is folded shut - in other words, further down the vertical axis of the card than the rainbow is tall. The exact angle the base forms isn't crucial, but there needs to be one or the rainbow will fall flat.

There you are! Happy holidays and ... WHAT DOES IT MEAN??
