Digital Night Vision Goggles
This project demonstrates that with a low budget, you can make a monocular or binocular pair of digital NVGs. This pair is based on the BPNVG project. It uses an Foxeer Micro Night Cat 3 IR sensible camera and an Adafruit NTSC/PAL 2" display. This pair can be used on helmet mounts with a Wilcox L4G24 mount.
Supplies
As this is based on a similar project, I tried to use the components from it. You will need these components for one monocle:
- Foxeer Night Cat 3 Mini - Buy from official store, I bought an Aliexpress Fake at first, and it was terrible
- Adafruit 2" NTSC/PAL TFT Display - I firstly used an Aliexpress microdisplay, but it was awful.
- 42mm Diameter 50mm Focal Length Lens
- Style A Edmund Eyeguard - Had these laying around, you may use Aliexpress eyeguards with no difference
- 1mm diameter rubber to insulate the case - i had these laying around, no idea from where
- 1 M6x12 Mounting Plate Screw
- 2 M5x
- 4M3x30 Screws
- 4 M3x4 Screws
- 2 M3x6 Screws
- 4 M3 Standoffs (10mm total length)
- 4 M3 Nuts
Additionally, if using 2 monocles, you want to use 2 M5x14 Screws and 2 M5 Nuts.
All M3 screws are Rounded Head Philips, The M6 are Socketed Hex and are hardened (Class 8.8 - Class 10.9). The M5 must be sunk, as they need to fit inside the 3D model.
Mechanical Model
I made this model in Fusion 360, and the models are either made by me(Adafruit Display, Eyeguard), McMaster-Carr components, or from GrabCAD. The Eyeguard has been posted on GrabCAD. The model itself is 3D printed.
The goggles can be mounted on a standard NVG mounting plate with a Wilcox L4G24 mount.
Electrical Scheme
This scheme is very simple. I added a 14N001 Diode for reverse voltage protection. Signal from the display is a yellow wire, and the wire for the camera is white. Be aware not to connect white to white, as it won't work.
The working current is 315mAh for 12V, so a boost converter with an 2200mAh 18650 battery would last you approximately 2 hours.
Post Finishes
I applied glue to the wires sticking out of the enclosure, to make it resistant to water. A NATO green paint is sprayed on the body to fill the crevices of the 3d printed parts. The protection caps (Militech Logo) can be omitted, but I recommend screwing them when not using it.
