Delicious Pumpkin Pie With Decorative Pumpkin Platter Cover

In this instructable, I will show you how to make a decorative pumpkin platter cover and a delicious homemade pumpkin pie. Pumpkin season is here so its the perfect time for this fun project! The platter cover is a great decoration for any occasion and can be paired with any of you holiday favorites! I chose to use this pumpkin pie recipe with the platter cover because it is one of my favorite fall treats.

Supplies

Platter cover :

Large pumpkin

Carving utensils

Cardboard

Paper towels

Water+Vinegar spray

Large bowl

Wooden skewers

Small LED light

Writing utensils


Pumpkin Pie :

(This pumpkin pie recipe makes two pies.)

1 1/2 pints vanilla ice cream, softened

3 large eggs

1 3/4 cups pumpkin puree

3/4 cup white sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 (9 inch) unbaked pie shells

Whisk

Large mixing bowl

Measuring utensils

Spatula

Ladle

Baking sheet

Prep for Carving

Find a nice spot outside and lay out some cardboard and put all of your carving supplies and pumpkin on it.

Trace Your Cutout

Grab a pie crust that is 9 inches and place it on the bottom of your pumpkin. Grab a writing utensil and trace about an inch to half inch outside of the pie crust.

Cut Out the Bottom

Cut out the bottom of your pumpkin just outside of the line you had made.

Open It Up

Use something to pry the pumpkin open and pull off the bottom of the pumpkin. You can get rid of the bottom, you will not need it anymore.

Loosen the Seeds

Loosen the seeds from the inside of the pumpkin.

Empty the Pumpkin

Take out all of the seeds from the pumpkin so there is no leftovers inside the pumpkin.

Thin the Walls

Carve the inside walls of the pumpkin to thin the walls to give your pie enough room inside.

Draw

Pick and draw a design on your pumpkin.

Carve

Carve out your design.

Clean Pumpkin

Clean you pumpkin with a water and vinegar spray.

You are done carving! Now to the pie!

Prep Kitchen

Bring your pumpkin inside and measure out your ingredients. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C.) Place the ice cream near the warming oven to soften.

Eggs

Whisk your three eggs together.

Pumpkin Puree

Add in your pumpkin puree and mix it in with your eggs.

Keep Mixing!

Add in the sugar, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg.

Ice Cream

Slowly add in the softened ice cream and stir it in until the mixture is smooth.

Fill Pie Crust

With a ladle, fill the two 9 inch pie crusts with the mixture.

Baking Sheet

Place the pies on the baking sheet.

Bake

Put the pie in the oven and bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the oven tempurature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and bake for an additional 30-40 minutes (or until filling is set.)

Lights

While the pies are baking take your pumpkin and place the LED light in the top. Put skewers in the pumpkin over it to keep it in place.

Stick more skewers in the pumpkin over the light to support the light.

Take Pies Out

Pull your pies out and set one on a plate.

Place the pumpkin over the pie and you are done!
