Deer Repeller - Refillable

My wife and I have deer problem in our yard. They especially like Hosta, begonias, and sedum. I have the vegetable garden fenced, and much of the sides of the yards,but not the front and rear of the yard. I got this idea from a garden catalog that was selling 25 garlic oil vials for $19.95. I would need at least 50 so I looked for something that maybe cheaper and I hope easier. I had half inch drip irrigation main supply hose and regular deer repellent that you had to dilute and spray on the plants. It burned some and had to be re-applied after each rain. I wanted something that would be persistent and linger and be replentishable.

I have not done any study as to how effective this will be in a variety of situations. In a real drought, it may not work, or some deer may not be turned off by it. But deer seem to be finicky in what they eat and not consistent. If you try this please let me know what results you have. It has worked for me so far this summer.

You need to bend the pipe into a V shape and get it to stay there. Tape got hot and stretched. After a few trials I found this to be easiest. Just punch two holes in the end of the pipe and fasten with some thin wire.

It takes a little practice to bend the pipe evenly, but symmetry is not really critical. Secure with the small guage wire.

You don't want those cut ends of wire to harm you so get them out of the way as best you can. If anyone has a better way please let me know or make a comment. I did not show them, but a needle nose set of pliers make this easier.

I used about a half a towel, but this is not critical and it depends on the kind of paper towel. Recess it some so the repellent you add will not run out. It takes a bit of time for it to be absorbed.

This is 9 guage wire which is overkill and tough to cut and bend. I also used the wire that holds insulation between floor joists also, left over from long a long ago insulation job in the garage. Coathanger wire is about the right guage.

Ready for sticking in the ground inside or beside the plant.

You can easily flip them over to refill. I have been doing it ever 2-3 weeks. Probably should have done it this weekend. If the deer dine it will be my fault.
