"DUCKY" Toddler Costume

Since I saw the movie Toy Story 4, the personality of Ducky and Bunny caught my attention, they are very fun characters that give a spark of humor and freshness to the movie, then I found out that these characters were played by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, who always make me laugh too much with their comedy sketches, so I decided I had to do something about it, and now that my son is grown up and loves Toy Story, I decided to dress him up as the crazy duck from Toy Story 4: Ducky.

For this project we will need basic craft supplies, such as:

• Scissors. 
• XActo or cutter. 
• contact cement. 
• adhesive tape.
• Hard EVA foam. 
• a lot of Yellow fur fabric.
• a bit of Orange fur fabric,.
• Glitter EVA Foam Sheet.
• and some paper templates.

some extra materials: a transparent plastic bottle.

(although the bottle is not essential, later you will see how I will use them.)

Ducky is a classic yellow duck.

A soft and funny stuffed toy.

He has some distinctive features that we will consider to make our project as similar as possible to the character we see on screen.

We will study every detail of the character to be able to make it as faithful as possible to the original character design.

Download the templates: "Ducky Head" attached in this step, and cut them to form the shapes in image 3.

Please note that the file is designed for children ages 1-2, and is ready to print on letter-sized paper.

Using tape, glue the respective parts of the template together to create a complete template piece, which will then be transferred to the EVA foam.

Now take the templates and place them on the eva foam rubber sheet and with a marker transfer them onto the sheet

Now cut the parts that were marked on the EVA foam

After cutting them, it is time to join them. To do this, use contact adhesive on the edges where the pieces are supposed to be joined according to the guide you will find in the next step.

Here you will find a 3D view of how the pieces have to be joined together, these are two views that will help you in the assembly.

Please note image number 1 of step 4 where the pieces are organized.

You can assemble the joints in various ways, but what I recommend is to do the front part first and then the back ones so that the structure is more symmetrical.

Use glue to place a piece of Velcro on the front of Ducky's "helmet or head."

This will help make it easier to position on your child's head.

In this step I will pause to check that the size of the extra pieces that go on the helmet are correct.

Cut the pieces that will give more detail to your helmet, such as Ducky's eyes and beak.

Download the third image and print it in letter size

Use the eye template and transfer it to the foam after that cut it, to make the edge of the eyes

use yellow eva foam for the eyelid take the measurements based on the size of the eye

For the eye we will use a water bottle, also use the size of the eye to make the respective cutout

Now you can put the pieces together to see how it looks.

Then, with the template, take the measurements to recreate the respective pupil, using foam of various colors, white, pink and black.

Now you will have the pieces ready to assemble the eye.

you must do this process twice

Use glue to join the respective eye pieces in the correct order, be very careful with excess glue.

For the beak do the same with the templates, transfer and cut.

also sand the edges to create a curvature and smoothness

Mark with a marker and make the respective cuts where the beak has protuberances.

Do the same for the two parts of the beak, the upper and the lower.

In this step I make a preview of the final shape

With the glue, cover the entire beak piece, and make a simple lining by pressing on the fabric and covering each area of ​​the 2 parts of the beak and on both sides.

Here we will give shape to the protuberances simulating the characteristic seam of the plush dolls

Press the fabric well so that it fits well into the gaps in our piece, and ut off excess fabric very carefully.

For Ducky's hair or lock of hair we will cut thin strips of foam (quite a few) to create the illusion of hair, after cutting several strips join them in a handful and glue them to their base

Now with our respective fabric samples, we begin wrapping our helmet

In this project we will not use the sewing process, we will do everything with glue, so with the help of hot glue we will glue the fabric to our formed pieces.

The head is a very easy part so we will glue it from the top with small drops or lines of glue.

When you finish covering the head, cut off the excess fabric and glue it with the glue gun to adjust the fabric more to the spherical shape. In the end it will have a nest-like shape, the intention of this is for it to function as a vent for our child's face.

Also adjust any loose parts with more glue.

Now we have all our respective head pieces it's time to join them together, and for this once again we will use the glue gun as it gives a better grip on the fabric

Before gluing anything on the fuzzy fabric, I recommend using a comb and brushing all the fabric aside to get a firmer base and more adhesion.

Likewise do the same for the upper hairs and the eyes.

At this point you should have Ducky's head finished. Now it's the body's turn

Download the templates: "Ducky Bodyd" attached in this step, and cut them to form the shapes in image 2.

Please note that the body file is designed for children ages 1-2, and is ready to print on letter-sized paper.

Here you will find a 3D view of how the body pieces have to be joined together, these are two views that will help you in the assembly.

Please note image number 2 of step 32 where the pieces are organized.

Mark your pieces with a pen or chalk so you don't make mistakes when assembling them, and keep in mind these images that indicate the lower part of the tail and the upper part of the torso.

Using chalk or a pen, mark two holes at the bottom for leg access.

With the help of a cutter make the respective holes

Do the same for the other leg, and leave an opening in the back of the torso for our child's access, then we will create some velcro snaps for their union after putting it on, In the crotch I also made a cut to avoid the pressure of the costume on the lower part.

Also make the cuts for the arm holes according to your child's height. In my case, I left some space for the shoulders.

Now place the Velcro with the help of the glue in the respective parts where you have to make joints to keep the suit closed.

It's time to cover the bottom of the costume with furry fabric.

For better coverage we will use tape to obtain more exact patterns on the surface of our costume.

Cover the piece of foam with pieces of tape and then remove the tape carefully so as not to destroy the pattern obtained

Now make small cuts in the pattern obtained, specifically in the curved parts, and spread them out on the fabric to then mark and make the respective cuts

Do this for all parts starting from the bottom. Try to find areas without so many curves.

Also keep in mind that these furry fabrics shed a lot of fur, so be patient and have a clean area to avoid messes.

To finish wrapping the torso, fill all the parts with furry fabric.

For the parts that are hidden inside the pieces of the suit, we will use a pair of pants and a shirt from our child to take the molds.

Place the pants on the fabric and mark them with a pen along the edge of the fabric.

Then cut the pieces and glue them with hot glue along the edges, try to avoid excess glue so as not to burn your fingers when applying pressure.

Do the same with the sweater, make the patterns based on the reference sweater

and once again glue the edges

When joining both parts, leave one part of the front open so that it can be easily put on as if it were a jacket.

Now we will use a baby shoe to draw the patterns for Ducky's feet.

Now take the resulting pattern and move it radially to generate the shape of the feet.

After checking its size, make the respective modifications and transfer it to foam to give it a little more volume.

cut the piece.

Then trace the child's shoe once more and cut it out.

After making the cut we will cover the foam with a piece of Eva foam, this is to give more stability to the foam.

You will now have a solid but soft piece to attach to your baby's shoes, which will give the illusion of a duck foot.

Now cover with the fabric and hot glue

After wrap the feet, make a small cut at the base of the sole so as not to lose the grip of the shoe on the ground.

We are almost finished, after wrapping the sole, wrap the upper part of the feet

Finally we wrap the top part and then carefully cut off the excess fabric, so that the fabric is well stretched.

Replicate the procedure on the other shoe, don't forget the direction of the feet

Success, we are done, now we have all the pieces needed to put the costume on our child
