DIY Peripheral Rack Hack

final3.jpg
How to make a computer peripheral rack out of a literature rack/ paper sorter.

This is a take on something I found in a blog, but I cannot for the life of me remember where. The original had used the wobbly stackable paper sorters. I had this much more stable one to work with: the sides and tops are medium density fiberboard, the back is a very thin fiberboard and the shelves are just corrugated cardboard.

if someone knows where i saw it, email me and i will give them credit

Empty or Assemble Literature Sorter

You can of course just remove the back,
but for sorters made of cardboard all the way around,
the back is also for stability.
I also have a dust problem and wanted to leave the back on.

Drill Holes in the Rear

Choose a drill bit larger than the largest cable end.
1/2" to 3/4" drill bit should do fine.
the power cable on the modem was larger so i used a serrated knife to enlarge the hole.

You can mark off the shelves so you know where your drilling.
I just took a few wild ass guesses.

Connect the Computer Peripherals

Pull the cables through and connect all the computer peripherals.

The cable for the scanner is long enough to pull it out to use, so i put it on the bottom shelf.

I loosened the top of the back, so the router antennae could poke through.
If it poses a problem or I get a fifth peripheral I will move the router to the top.

Connect everything and you are done.
You can even use this idea to make a docking station,
though you need to make sure there is enough slack in the cabling,
so it doesn't snake out the back.
Perhaps securing the rear with duct tape over the holes.
