DIY Wooden Headboard

I made this (Queen-Size) headboard for my guestroom, and it is a great DIY option on a budget!

It is fastened to an existing bedframe, and the headboard itself can be easily assembled for only $50-100!

Brad Nails (With Or Without Brad Nail Gun)

Three 2"x4"x12's

One 1"x4"x16' Finger Joint Primed Board

One 1"x6"x8' Finger Joint Primed Board

Wood Glue

2-in-1 Paint/Primer

L-Brackets To Fasten To Bedframe

MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR INNER SQUARES:

(I went with 6" planks going diagonally, other options are listed below)

Two 28"x30" Decorative Plywood Panels/

Two 28"x30" Plywood Panels To Upholster

OR

40+ Linear Feet of 4" Planks (3.5" True Width)

OR

26+ Linear Feet of 6" Planks (5.5" True Width)

(If you decide to set planks diagonally, a 28"x30" sheet of paper or cardboard is required alongside a protractor.)

Cut 61" off all three 2"x4"x12's, then cut 59.5" off of two of the remaining three planks. Set both of the 59.5" planks 61" apart, and then screw both 61" planks to both 59.5" planks (as shown above) with countersunk screws. All four planks should be thin side up.

Rip the third 61" plank in half (Should be approximately 1.5"x1.5"), and cut the remainder of the original 2"x4"x12' plank into two 25.5" segments. Rip the one 25.5" segment in half (Should also be approximately 1.5"x1.5"), and mount all planks as shown above using countersunk screws from the outside. Optional spacers can now be fastened to accommodate baseboards the headboard will stand against.

Fill each half of the space on the front of the headboard with 28"x30" of the material selected earlier. This is mounted with countersunk screws to the inner planks assembled in the last step.

(If installing planks diagonally, it is easiest to make stencils from a 28"x30" sheet of paper or cardboard to get each diagonal plank exactly the right size and shape.) This requires a protractor.

Cut the 1"x4"x16" into three 21.5" segments and two 61" planks. Tack these in with brad nails and wood glue as shown above.

Next, cut and rip the 1"x6"x8' plank to the dimensions of 5"x67", and install that plank (centered) on the top of the headboard, also using wood glue and brad nails.

Lastly, all that needs done is filling in the screw holes, sanding, and painting!

After the paint dries, the headboard can be fastened to an existing bedframe with L-brackets, and the headboard is now complete!
