In this tutorial, we will be building a Turbo Turtle-shaped controller for the free game "Attack of the Bric-a-Brac," which can be downloaded here: mechbird.itch.io/attack-of-the-bric-a-brac.

  • 1 small thin box
  • 1 small cardboard box
  • 2 large cardboard tubes
  • 2 work gloves (Choose the color according to the decoration)
  • 1 roll of chicken wire
  • 1 stapler
  • 1 good box of staple refill
  • 1 pot or tube of strong glue
  • 1 glass of flour
  • 2 glasses of water
  • 1 roll of paper tape
  • 1 spool of string
  • 1 pack of skewers
  • 20 newspapers
  • 3 sheets of grape-size format (or equivalent of the three sheets with smaller format sheets) • 10 elastic bands
  • 1 cutter
  • Scissors
  • 1 pencil
  • 2 straps with clips
  • 1 spool of wire (choose the color according to the decoration)

  • Make the structure of the front and back part with thick but flexible cardboard sheets (if not, soften the cardboard using the edge of a table) by stapling or gluing them together.
  • Once the structures are made, lay chicken wire over the different parts of them. Make sure to get a shell-like shape by stretching the wire tightly.
  •  Be careful to secure the wire inside the structure by leaving some margin and stapling it.

Papier Mache

  • You need 1 cup of flour and 2 cups of water, thickened in a pot, you will get glue for your papier mache.
  • Take large strips of newspaper (predecut), soak them in glue once and apply them to the main structure and then add more glue.
  • Let it dry until it's dry. Once dry, cut off the excess newspaper on the edges.

The Mouse System

  • Top part: take a cardboard that is flexible enough to roll. Use two pieces of 10 cm width and 30 cm height.
  • Roll the cardboard in the height direction making sure to leave a passage for the string to pass through. With the scotch paper, fix your cardboard so it doesn't move. Put skewers around the tube and fix them with tape to reinforce the tube's structure. Repeat the same steps for the second tube.
  • Measure the size of your mouse. With a thin cardboard, make a bottom box by making a hole (smaller rectangle) so the mouse doesn't fall and the mouse's surface sensor can take into account the surface of the second box we will make later.
  • Make two small holes facing each other on the sides, that is, the long parts of the small box 8mm from the edge to the center of the width to be able to pass the string on both sides.
  • Cut two pieces of string 40cm long, pass them through the holes in the box and tie a knot at each end of the strings inside the box to block them.
  • Take a box that is large enough to allow movement of the small box (mouse) from left to right and if possible the same length as the small box, so they only move on the x-axis.
  • Make a hole on the part of the box that can't open and will be facing you under the shell. Make sure to have a border equivalent to the height of the small box inside.
  • Remember to cut a piece of the border centrally to be able to open it and place the mouse more easily inside the small box.
  • On the big box, make holes on the sides at the same height as the small box and in the center of the face.
  • Pass the strings of the mouse box through the holes of the big box on both sides.
  •  Pass these strings through the cardboard tubes you made previously making sure there is not too much slack in the ropes and check for proper movement."

The Shell Tiles

  • Draw the shell pattern.
  • Then, take the measurements of the shell using string and a ruler.
  • Make patterns according to the pattern made for the shell.
  • After that, cut out the pieces from the pattern and place them on both parts to make the necessary adjustments so that all the pieces match well. Be careful to take a photo of the layout after finishing this step.
  • Once everything is good, cut out the shapes using the patterns in thick cardboard.

The Control Location

IMG_20230120_094413.jpg
  • Cut a large tube making sure to have two parts that each make the circumference of the forearm of the tallest person physically who will play the game.
  • Cut each of these tubes in the length. Add a piece of flat cardboard inside the same length as the obtained parts and width that allowed each hand to pass inside.
  • Double the small piece of cardboard, add and fix it to the tube with paper tape, then repeat the same thing for the second tube.
  • And if you want to add a little relief and decoration, cut small rectangles and arrange them as in the photos.

Gloves

Capture d'écran 2023-01-31 09.13.52.png
  •  Buy sturdy gloves, the largest possible (depending on the players) and if you want to decorate them like in the photos:
  • Trace around the glove on a sheet with a pencil,
  • Draw small shapes on this silhouette and cut them out.
  • Using this, transfer the pieces to cardboard.
  • Paint them the same color as the glove,
  • Connect each piece with elastic,
  • Fix the whole thing to the gloves with strong glue (the gloves are worn during the operation !!).
  • Fix with clips or strong glue the gloves inside the large tubes made just before to obtain the same thing as in the video.

The Fin

  • For the fin, draw the shape on paper beforehand to make a pattern and then transfer it to thick cardboard. If you do not have any, double the shape and put paper tape to make the piece.
  • After finishing the different parts, assemble the pieces by forming notches in the vertical parts and making end pieces on the horizontal part of the fin.
  • Fix the whole thing with strong glue and tape.

Exhaust Pipes

  • Take a large tube and then cut a long enough piece to make the front of the pipe.
  • Add a cardboard circle to plug one end of the cut tube.
  • Take another part of the starting tube and make a longitudinal cut (in the length).
  • Reduce the circumference of the tube so that it can be placed in the center of the large tube.
  • Cut the top diagonally so that the smaller tube can be attached to the large tube.
  • Redo a diagonal cut for the other end but in the same direction as the first. The final shape should look like a kind of S.
  • Then fix everything with glue or tape as in the photo and repeat the process for the second pipe.

Assembly

  • Start by attaching the large system box beneath the shell.
  • Determine where to run the tubes on the surface to draw the zones and make holes in the shell using a cutter.
  • Run the tubes through the holes. Make sure the bottom of the tube underneath the shell is level with the holes. If the part above the shell is too high, untie the string and cut off the excess so that when you have your hands in the gloves, the elbows of the larger player can touch the shell. Retie the string.
  • To ensure that the tubes do not sink under the shell, keep the previous arrangement, pass two skewer sticks through the two tubes inside the shell against the wall and secure the skewers with strong glue and tape (pivot system).
  • To finish the system, attach the tube-glove combination to the top of the previously attached tubes with paper tape. The system is ready to be used.
  • For the back of the shell, place the fin where you would like to put it and trace the base with a pencil. Make a hole with a cutter at the location and position the fin. Secure it with tape and strong glue.
  • Do the same thing with the exhaust pipe.
  • Now that the system, fin, and exhaust pipes are secured, you can glue all of your tiles.
  • The only ones you can't glue are the ones that occupy the place of the holes that have been made.
  • Simply recut, readapt these tiles and glue them.
  • To finish, you will need to put a thick and tightly stretched string that you will secure on the width, on the edge of the structure at the bottom of the back to keep the back of the shell straight.
  • After all this, you will just need to secure the two straps to the two parts of your shell.
  • One last detail, using a wire you can weave a necklace with a pendant where you will fix a micro-tie. (Choose your wire according to your decoration)

And you're done. Congratulations 🔥🔥🔥🔥
