DIY Swimming Pool Pole Handle

My store-bought pool pole constructed from aluminum and plastic broke. It wasn't cheap and I didn't want to buy another one and risk breaking it again. So I made a sturdier pool pole using inexpensive materials.

Hardware

• 1.5" wood screws x9

Lumber

• 1x4x15.75" dimensional lumber
• 2x2x37" dimensional lumber. Use a longer length if you want a longer pool pole

Tools

• Wood saw
• Drill
• Drill bit for drilling screw holes
• Screw bit for driving screws

1. Cross cut the 1x4x15.75" dimensional lumber into 5.25" lengths with a wood saw. You should end up with three pieces.
2. Take one 5.25" piece from the previous step and rip cut it into two 1.25" wide pieces. This width needs to match your pool tools for a snug fit, mine were 1.25".
3. Butt join the pieces together so that the square hole that it forms inside is 1.25"x1.25".
4. Screw the pieces together.

1. Take the 2x2x37" dimensional lumber and cut a tenon that is 1.25"x1.25" square so that it fits into the square hole of the pool tool attachment piece. Cut the tenon 3" long.

1. Insert the pole handle's tenon into the square hole of the pool tool attachment piece.
2. Drive a screw through the pool tool attachment piece and the pole handle's tenon to keep them together.

This is what the finished product looks like in my case. Yours might be different depending on whether different dimensions are used.

Potential Improvements

• Longer pole handle for convenience (and make it "telescoping")
• Use a more water resistant wood than pine
