DIY Katana Mask From the Suicide Squad Film
I should mention that the character of Katana from the movie the Suicide Squad, varies from the ones that were portrayed in DC Comics, Smallville, Arrow TV series, and video games. So I designed the mask based on the character Katana from the upcoming film. Let me remind you that the basis of the character is Katana/Tatsu Yamashiro – who is the Japanese mercenary that uses swords (katanas), she is played by Karen Fukuhara. According to some tidbits of information (spoiler alert), Katana is the bodyguard of Rick Flag - the leader of the Suicide Squad, (the one that asks in the trailer: “Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you, people?”). So I decided to make this replica of her mask. The different versions that I have seen on the internet are made of leather, but it seems that hers is made of porcelain, or something like that. So I decided to create this one using 3D printing. It is made of plastic, but with the following tips it will look like it has a ceramic cover with cracks. You can use it for a Cosplay costume or for Halloween.
Here's what you will need:
3D model of Katana Mask from my shop. I only charge $1 (if you are quite skillful you can make your own)
3D printer (though you can use Treatstock’s 3D printing network, it will cost you about $5)
Scissors or pliers for taking the support away
Sandpaper (Grit size P150 - P220)
Paint brushes
Acrylic paint
Medium crackle coat
Protective transparent coat (satin clear)
Super Glue
3D Print the Mask
Go to my shop https://www.treatstock.com/u/id1002 and print the mask. If you have a 3D printer, it will cost you only $1 for the design, otherwise it will cost $5 or more depending on the material you want to use and your shipping details. I recommend using PLA or ABS plastic. Here I explain how to use Treatstock's 3D printing network.
Sanding
When you get your model, carefully take away all the support leftovers and sand it using your sandpaper. After sanding it, the acrylic paint will apply much better.
Putting a First Layer of Paint
Put a layer of grey acrylic paint on it and paint the circle red. When it dries, cover it with a medium crackle coat. I used “Plaid”, but others will also be fine.
Painting the Mask With White
Without waiting for the crackle coat to dry it should be covered with a thick layer of white acrylic paint. The wetter the coat is; the more crackles will appear. I waited for about 20 minutes.
Final Strokes
Then, add more red paint to the circle and put some grey on the cracks if you want them to pop out. If there are too many fractures, add some more white paint to them. When it finally dries, add a protective transparent coat (satin clear). That will make mask shiny and will keep it clean.
Attachments
Now, when everything is finished, add the two attachments to the inside of the mask so you will be able to thread a string through it so you can wear it. If you don’t have them, you can print from my shop https://www.treatstock.com/u/id1002 Also, check out other cool 3D printable stuff like the Deadshot mask from the upcoming movie.
