According to Wikipedia the Cossack knot.

".. is quite common in Russia and is often used instead of the bowline".

The Cossack Knot is also known as the "Eskimo Bowline". The June 2000 issue of the IGKT (International Guild of Knot Tyers) periodical calls it a "more compact and secure alternative" to the common bowline.
