Clothes Hanger to Help Reaching High Shelves of the Wardrobe

In this instructions, we show you how to make a clothes hanger for those who can’t reach high shelves in the closet, without changing anything. It was designer for a person on a wheelchair, but can be used by everyone!

From choosing the right dimensions of your shelf, you’ll be able to replicate our project.

Supplies

-         Metal wire 5 mm diameter x 180 cm lenght

-         Gloves for welding

-         Protective glasses for welding

-         Welding mask

-         Sand paper or sand paper machine

-         Epoxy glue

-         Weld metal machine

-         Cut metal machine

-         Spray for metal (you choose the colour)

-         Bending metal machine

-         3d printer or ready-made handle

Take Measurements in Your Closet

Calculate the dimensions in your closet’s shelf.

We considered the 4th shelves from the bottom and its dimensions were:

  • 75 cm lenght
  • 31 cm height
  • 28 cm depth
  • 1.7 cm height of the shelf

Cut the Metal Wire

Take the metal wire, mark with a pencil on the metal the place that you have to cut and cut it in three parts:

-         55 cm (x2 parts)

-        70 cm (in this case depends how height you want your closet and how long is the thick of the shelf, our is 1.7 cm).

Mark Every Part for Bending

Mark every part to bend following the drawing.

Check that our dimensions fit your wardrobe, otherwise, with our drawing, calculate yours.


The 2d sketch are in scale 1:1, so if you print it in A3 it is gonna be in real scale and you can use it as a trace to put your metal wire on and find the right angle of bending (just be careful that the 75 cm part is cut out from the paper, so it should be a little bit longer).

Bend the Metal Wire

Depending what do you have for bending, or a bending machine (like that one in the picture) or just hand.

Bending the Lowest Part

Also bend 2 cm of the lowest part of the two little parts in order to make the hanger entry in an easier way, help yourself with a piece of cardboard to not spoil the color.


*we made the mistake of doing this step after everything, that's why the pictures are colored

Mark the Spots Where You Will Need to Weld

Mark the spots where you will need to weld and take some objects that you have to help you maintain 90° inclination.

Welding

Weld the two similar parts to the main one. Start pushing one side of the small part to the main wire and weld it, check if also the other line is in angle and then weld also the other.

Do the same with the other part.


Don't forget to use protective equipment - gloves and a welding mask!

Sanding

Sand and clean the welding points if needed with the tools that you have, like a sanding maching or a sanding tool.

Coloring

Cover the part for the handle and spray the hanger with the color that you like the most, we chose black spray for metal.


Protective layers are needed to protect the color. We used a transparent protection spray and did 2 layers.

Print or Buy Your Handle and End Cap

Print in 3d the attached file of the handles, following the next steps:

-open the file (we have attached both Solidworks both STL file) and if you need, modify it

- save the file as STL (or open the one we attached)

-put the file in a slicer like CURA (Printing project quality is the file we used for the settings)

-check if everything is okay

-send it to print! We used PLA as printing material.


*This file is a SolidWorks file and can be converted to other 3D files.

Attach the Handles With the Glue

Attach the handles to the model with epoxy glue.

And you're product is ready!!
