Clip Tenons Joint

In this tutorial, I will guide through the process of building a clip tenons joint using two wooden pieces and a CNC Machine. The joint is very stable and can support a lot of force. However, the building process might be a little tedious.

Supplies

  • 2x (160x160x18mm) wood boards
  • Saw
  • Wooden hammer
  • Sandpaper
  • CNC Machine

I used Rhino 7 to model the pieces. I chose 10 mm as divider between all the slots, and 20mm at the end. I attached the files in the section above.

I exported the file to Carbide Create to process the itinerary for the CNC files to follow. I used a 3.5 wood end mill to carve out the pieces.

After taking out the pieces from the CNC, I tried in a first attempt to fit the pieces into the corresponding slots using a clamp to fit them into it. After that I was using a wooden hammer to push the pieces together. However, it ended being a complete failure. The holes were too tight for the pieces and ended up by breaking. On a second attempt, I repeated the entire process but this time I sanded the holes to leave enough space for the pieces to get in. And it worked!
