Carving a bear is possible with just a few tools and some wood, preferably basswood. The initial steps might pose a challenge, but as you progress, it becomes more enjoyable than difficult. The comical appearance and unique fur texture make carving a bear an intriguing project. With a bit of imagination, you can create various variations. Simply painting it white transforms it into a polar bear, while black paint turns it into a black bear. Additionally, altering the bear's pose or tilting its head is easily achievable. To give it a different expression, you can carve its eyes into oval or square shapes.

In this step, you will carve the arms and other parts of the bear according to the previously marked lines. Then, using a 6 mm V-tool, you will deepen the lines that were indicated earlier. In this step, you'll use a 2 mm #9 gouge and a 7 mm #5 gouge to tidy up the head. This involves refining the details and smoothing out any rough areas to give the head a clean and polished appearance.

Then utilize a 7 mm #9 gouge to carve out the bear's ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. This tool helps to shape these facial features with precision and detail.

To remove small plugs for the eyes and to alleviate excess areas, continue using the same gouge from step 6.

To carve the open mouth, use a knife until you achieve the desired opening size. Then, to outline the bear's tongue, employ a 4 mm V-tool.

To sketch the primary locks of hair, you'll require two gouges. The first is a 13 mm #9 gouge, and the second is the same gouge used in step 5.

In the final step of your woodcarving process, you'll paint certain parts of the bear as shown in the photo. After that, you'll create a mixture of dark paint and light Briwax in equal parts, using a stiff paintbrush. Then, using a rag, you'll wipe off the excess wax to achieve the desired finish.
