Cardboard and Paper Telescope With 90 Degree Mirror Diagonal

IMG_8862.jpg

For the Instructables Paper and Cardboard Contest, I decided to create a cardboard telescope along with a 90-degree mirror diagonal. This project showcases how simple materials like cardboard can be transformed into functional and educational tools. The telescope is not only a fun and engaging project but also serves as an excellent introduction to the basics of astronomy and optics. The addition of a 90-degree mirror diagonal enhances the viewing experience by allowing more comfortable observations of celestial objects. Let’s dive into the steps to create your very own cardboard telescope and mirror diagonal

Supplies

Materials Needed:

  • Cardboard tubes (650 mm approx.)
  • flat piece of cardboard
  • Cardboard sheets
  • Telescope eyepiece
  • 50 mm lens
  • A small mirror (for the diagonal)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

To make a 90-degree diagonal, cut two square pieces of cardboard based on the dimensions of your mirror. Make a hole in both square pieces of cardboard that matches the size of your eyepiece.

Create a 90-degree angle between the two pieces of cardboard with holes. Then, cut another square piece of cardboard of the same size and attach it between them in such a way that when light enters one hole, it reflects 90 degrees into the other hole

Now, take a paper and cut it into lengthy rectangle then roll the paper around the eyepiece to make it circular and attach it to both sides of the holes in the 90-degree diagonal.

Next take a flat piece of cardboard, roll it into a tube, and ensure it fits easily inside the main tube.

Make a circular piece of cardboard with the same diameter as the tube and create a hole in the center that allows the eyepiece to fit easily inside. Then, stick it securely with glue.

Cut a small front portion of the main tube, reduce its internal size by grinding or filing it, and fix the 50 mm lens in that space. Then, attach this modified portion to the main tube using glue or tape.

Assemble all the components together, and your telescope is ready to use.
