Cardboard BMO
Ever see a super cool cardboard sculpture and wonder to yourself “how the heck did they do this?!” well wonder no more! I’ve created an instructable that introduces the world of cardboard sculpture, cardboard crafts are an amazingly fun and cheap way to create plus it’s super easy to learn! For this instructable I created a cardboard BMO from the tv show Adventure Time, the outlines I created for this were my own and I did not make prior ones on paper, but if you aren’t confident in drawing directly on the cardboard, it may be in your best interest to draw them on paper before hand then trace cut outs on the cardboard.
Supplies
Cardboard (I used a medium/small sized box)
Pencil/Marker
Scissors
Cutting Mat Ruler
Glue Sticks/Hot Glue Gun
X-Acto knife/ Box Cutter
Outlining
Time to outline! For the arms and legs I just made a general width and length so don’t feel like you need to do it exactly.
Cutout
Time to cut everything out! I cut out doubles of each outline except the 32X3 in strip, which you’ll only need one of. Keep in mind that you may need to cut out more pieces dependent on how you’d like yours to come out looking. Then draw on BMO’s buttons and the screen rectangle on one of the 10.5x7.5 in rectangles.
Making BMO's Front Panel
Cut out the screen rectangle, and the other ports three ports BMO has (cutting these out will give it a more 3D effect), then cut only the first layer of cardboard to show coregations to give a clear image of buttons. Next take one of the 6x5 in rectangles and draw on the eyes and mouth then cut the same as the buttons, this rectangle will be placed under the cut out screen rectangle, this should also be placed to cover the cut out of the long port. Use the other cut out 6x5in rectangle and use it to cover the other two ports, cut as necessary for gluing, then glue.
Gluing
Time to glue everything together. Take the 32x3 in strips and bend along the corigations to help it curve around both front and back faces of BMO for glues as you glue be sure to go back and glue along the inside to make sure it's secure (if the faces seem to not fit well, feel free to add extra cardboard as needed). Next carve in the speaker holes and the letters “BMO” on both sides of BMO, keep in mind that the arms will have to fit in the “O”
Arms and Legs
Time to finish by gluing on the arms and legs! For this final step use the 26x0.7 in strips (cut as more as necessary) and bend at corrugations to create clean curves. The glue cardboard strip along the edges of the duplicate cut outs of the legs and arms creating effect as seen in picture above.
Finish!
Once you’ve glued the arms, take a step back and admire your awesome work! I hope that this project makes you think a little differently about cardboard and inspires you to make more cool stuff!
