Lately, when my kids have requested a new toy, we first attempt to make It. This is our version of the baby doll bunk bed my daughter requested. She loves it and is proud of the fact that she helped make it.

We first took the Costco box and placed my daughters baby doll in it to get an idea of the size of the bed we would need. We took the Costco box and cut two 15 1/2 x 9 1/2" x 4 1/2 in. ends to make the beds. We then took the other box and cut off the flaps so the top and bottom were open. We had to trim it down in so that it would tightly wrap around the bed cutouts. The bottom bed frame was hot glued inside the big box 2 inches from the bottom and the top bed frame was hot glued inside the big box flush with the top.

So now we have a bottom and top bunk bed enclosed in a 16" x 17" x 10 " box. We can see the top bed frame but need to open up the bottom bunk. We made an incision in the center and then cut up to the top bunk and down to the top of the bottom bunk. We cut a rectangle of 13" x 8" leaving 1 1/2 in of bed frame at each end.

Next we cut the shape we wanted the bed frame to have. Pictured are the measurements of the cuts we made. We measured and drew it out. After completing the first cutout we traced that one on the other three lengths. With the top ends we did the same. We drew it out based on our drawing measurements and then traced the other end.

We peeled off a thin layer of the cardboard to cover the cut ends. This gives the cardboard a more finished look and makes it easier to paint. We glued the thin cardboard to cover all the cut ends and then trimmed off the excess with a utility knife.

We then painted the entire bed frame with white acrylic paint. We wanted to add some color to the bunk beds next. For the top bunk we took a piece of cardboard and cut it to fit in the top bunk headboard area. We then traced the shape of the bed frame and cute the cardboard to match. We took an old dress that no longer fit my daughter and used it for fabric. We wrapped the fabric tightly around the cardboard and used hot glue to secure it. On the bottom bunk it already had a headboard like frame. We cut fabric to fit and hot glued it in place.

Next we used fabric to wrap the sideboards. We attached fabric with hot glue. We then cut out decorative pieces and wrapped them with fabric and glued onto the ends of the bed frame.

Next we wanted to make a mattress for the top and bottom bunk. We cut two rectangular pieces of cardboard 14" x 9 ". We cut a piece of white pillow case a pan inch larger in all directions. We then hot glued three of the sides and then put fabric stuffing inside. Finally we glued the fourth side to make a mattress. We used the remaining fabric to make some quick pillows. We turned the fabric inside out and glued 3 sides and part of the 4th. We pulled the inside out so the fabric pillow had nice clean ends. We stuffed the pillow and glued the rest of the 4th side.
