Aurora Borealis Melted Crayon

I have always loved the northern lights and moving to Alaska has only added to that love of these elusive beautiful sights of nature. I wanted to represent this sight by melting crayons across a page.

The Supplies

Small pot

Water

Oven mitt

Tongs

Small glass jar

Construction paper (I think the vibrant colors show up better on white)

Broken crayon pieces of any color

Hair dryer

Step 1

• Take the broken crayon pieces you have picked and remove their wrappers.

Step 2

• Lay out the paper you have chosen in a place near your stove, but in a spot with ample space, light, and a nearby outlet for your hairdryer.

Step 4

• In your small pot place a small amount of water. 
• For the small jar that I chose I used about two cups of water.
• Place the pot on the unit and turn on high.

Step 5

• You will need to pick the color you want to start with and break up the pieces into smaller chunks.
• Place these pieces into the small glass jar.
• Place the small glass jar into your pot of water.
• For the amount of crayon I used, I let it boil anywhere from 1 ½ minutes to 2 minutes for the crayon to be all the way melted.
• Remove jar from pot with tongs.
• Careful it will be hot!

Step 6

• Pick up jar with oven mitt.
• Carefully pour out melted crayon onto your paper.
• You can do a straight or curved line-your choice.
• Leave plenty of space between line and edge of paper as you will be spreading crayon around with hairdryer.

Step 7

• Take your hair dryer and turn it on.
• I turned mine on high.
• Angle the nozzle at the paper so that it will remelt any solid crayon and spread it around the page.
• The way you move your hairdryer will change the effect of how the crayon spreads across the paper.
• Be careful not to run your cord or your nozzle through the melted crayon.

Step 8

• Repeat steps 5-7 as many times as necessary to get all your different colors melted on the page and spread in the design you desire.

Step 9

• Let your finished piece set and then find a place to display it.
