Artist Watercolor Cookies

There's nothing better than playing with your food! These art cookies and edible watercolor are so simple to prepare, and super easy to tweak. Whether making custom cookies for a special someone or expressing a bold statement through edible art, watercolor cookie art will have your back. Just make sure they aren't too pretty to eat!

• Cutout Sugar Cookie dough
• Royal icing
• Ziploc or piping bag
• Red, Blue, and Yellow Food Coloring
• Honey or Corn Syrup
• Paint Palette or Ice Tray
• A clean/new paintbrush (note: wash thoroughly with dish soap before using)

First, acquire yourself some sugar cookie dough. I used premade dough, but feel free to use your favorite recipe.

Then use a rolling pin to flatten the dough to 1/4 inch thick, cut into large rectangles with a sharp knife or cookie cutter, and bake according to the recipe instructions.

Allow the cookies to cool completely before doing this step. They should be around room temperature or lower, or the icing will melt.

Put your royal icing in a Ziploc or piping bag and cut a small hole at the tip. Then, outline your painting area by drawing a rectangle on the cookie, then filling it in completely. If you see air bubbles forming in the icing layer, pop them with a toothpick.

Let your cookie canvases dry at room temperature for 8 hours or until the royal icing is hard to the touch. If you don't let the icing harden completely, it will collapse when being painted, and that's never fun.

In a palette or ice tray, mix 1 teaspoon royal icing and 1/2 teaspoon honey or corn syrup in each of 3 sections. Add 6-8 drops of red, yellow, and blue food coloring, then mix thoroughly. After, you can mix the secondary colors (orange, green, purple) by combining these base colors.

Grab your paints, a canvas cookie, a cup of water, and your clean paintbrush, and let your imagination run wild!
