Arctic Housing and Energy Sources
The extreme condition I have decided to create housing for is the Arctic. The two main reasons for this are that there is easy access to clean water and plentiful ways to get food. That means that those two issues will not need to be addressed in the future. The main concerns I have run into are a year-round energy source and a housing unit that will keep the heat inside.
Supplies
This is the energy source and housing unit that I designed in AutoCAD. The supplies needed to create the housing would be metal poles for supporting the enclosure, an outer shell that is metal, solar panels for energy, and an inside shell to make the air pocket for insulation. All this comes together to trap the heat inside the housing. Another thing to add is that the floor would be made of two metal sheets with an air pocket in between to retain heat better, and a carpet made from wool to keep the feet from freezing on the metal.
Main Power Source
This image here will be the year-round power. It uses the power of waves to create pressure inside the machine. This simple action creates energy by turning the turbine on the inside. This, in turn, spins the axle on the generator and causes it to produce energy.
Secondary Power Source
Solar panels will be installed on the housing shell for additional energy. This gives the housing power while the sun is out but the problem I ran into was how to get power when the sun isn't out. Considering the sun in the Arctic is either always out, or it's always dark, using solar panels isn't the best way to gain energy. This can be stored in generators for the time with no sun but if all the energy from that is used, no way to use electricity is found. That is the reason for the primary source through waves. That allows for a constant source when there is no light.
Heating
The heating seems complicated at first. It's too cold to use traditional air conditioning so other methods must be used. The coil heating method uses electricity to heat the coils. That makes this the most effective way to increase the temperature inside.
Inside Appliances and Furniture
The inside would contain necessities like a gas stove, a cold-temperature sleeping bag, a bed, and a couch. The person would bring other items to customize their house to their liking.
Conclusion
The model above is a three-dimensional rendering of the outside of the housing itself. The problems created by these extreme conditions led to the use of many different things. Ways to find year-round energy and heating were the biggest problems. The housing would have interiors based on the needs of the people and what they want inside. All basic furniture and appliances will be inside but it is up to the residents to create the atmosphere they want.
