Acrylic Plexi Bender

Fuser.jpg

This is a very simple and cheap way to construct a system to bend Acrylic glass or plexiglass by locally heating the plate. Instead of a heated wire we will use a heating stip salvaged from a fuser unit of a laser printer.

Taking the Heating Strip Out the Fuser.

Isolated strip.jpg

Take the fuser apart and take the heating strip out. Adapt the holder by removing material so that it forms a nice long holder which fits the strip.

Identify Correct End of the Strip

end.jpg

Identify the end which makes contact with the strip. the other end is used to measure the temperature in the fuser. Apply voltage on the end to heat the strip. Gradually apply a higher voltage till the strip reaches a temperature where it can be bend

Make Board

Take a piece of MDF and make a a slot which hold the holder for the strip using a router. The heating strip should not touch the Plexi glass.

Assemble

Place the Holder and strip in the plate and the system is ready to use. Apply the correct voltage and place the acrylic glass on the board. It will heat very locally and can easilly be bend. Slowly increase the voltage from zero till the strip is hot enough to heat the acrylic glass
